I’m not sure what’s gotten into me these past few weeks, but I’ve been in a bit of a nesting mood. Maybe it was sparked by a few cloudy days and slightly cooler temperatures that got me excited for fall and spending more time cozied up at home with my people.

Modern Cottage Dining Room Idea
One area that’s never felt quite finished is my dining room and admittedly, we don’t use it all the time, but part of that is because it doesn’t feel like that special of a place. It’s a small, square room with doorways on 3 sides, which has made it a little tricky. Despite that, I wanted to share what we’re thinking in here, or rather what I’m thinking because my husband doesn’t really care what I do—bless him!
We currently have most of the elements in here, it’s just pulling it all together. Maybe some grasscloth wallpaper one day? Swoon, a girl can dream, but that’ll have to wait a bit longer.
Here you can see two previous versions of it, one from when we first moved in and the second from more recently.

I suddenly got the idea to swap our living room (a red and blue vintage woven rug) and dining room rug (washable and super soft green rug) and my little sister was here visiting this weekend and I put her to work! Moving the dining table was NOT easy, it was heavier than I remembered, but we made it work and I’m so happy with the switch!
This simple swap has given me more clarity about finishing this space and the above collage is inspiration and ideas of what I’m going for. A cozy, layered space that feels intimate and a bit fancy without being stuffy. Plus, this stunning light fixture?! I’ve had my eye on it for so long and found a dupe that fit the budget 😉
More Favorites
The red and blue vintage rug feels more elevated and will also hide spills better, while the green rug is much softer and perfect for little bodies to play on in the family room.
I love the idea of hanging some vintage plates and adding some new art that fits this space better. Something calm, possibly blue like the piece I’ve shown above, or a more modern piece to offset the vintage elements.

I can’t wait for it to come together in time for the holidays so we can host friends and family and make special memories in this space together.
